The City of Santa Clara has added a new park to its dossier of play spaces. The City officially cut the ribbon on Gateway Crossings Park on Aug. 27, opening the park on 1205 Coleman Ave., directly across the street from Costco. It’s just one piece of a massive development project undertaken by Hunter Properties.
“20 years ago, we acquired this property from here all the way down to Newhall [Street], not knowing exactly … where we want this project to end up,” said Deke Hunter of Hunter Properties. “It was only fitting the first thing we built was Earthquake Stadium … PayPal Park … And here we are in the last phase of this project, truly building a park.”
Hunter Properties worked with the Holland Partner Group to complete the final phase of the Gateway Crossings project. The phase consisted of more than 1,500 residential units, including affordable housing, ground-floor retail space and 225 hotel rooms.
Because of the size of the Gateway Crossings development, the city says the developer paid the fees to construct the park and then dedicated the park to the city in “fee title” on Aug. 6, 2025. Although the city now owns the park, the developer remains responsible for its maintenance. There is a public restroom in a nearby building that the developer also maintains.
So far, local reviews have been positive. San Jose resident Yacira brought her eight-year-old son George to check out the ribbon-cutting. They’ve
“I brought him to a lot of parks for him to have fun. So, I like to try new places. I think all the games are of little challenges, especially for him,” said Yacira.
George said he liked the silver spinner at the park and it didn’t get him too nauseous.
Sandra Jackson also received an invitation from the city and decided to check it out. She’s looking forward to bringing her eight-year-old grandson to the park while she walks around the path surrounding the playground.
“I really like the design, and I like the way that it’s covered for the sun with the kids … I think it’s interesting,” said Jackson. “And not only that, for the kids’ development, I think it’s going to be really good. Especially, if you’re like me, if you watch your kids grow, doing the different things when they get to a certain age at the park, I think that’s really good. I think they’re really going to enjoy it, and they’re going to feel confident in themselves as they develop, getting across one hurdle to the next … that’s really going to build confidence.”
Mayor Lisa Gillmor, Vice Mayor Kelly Cox, Council Members Kevin Park, Raj Chahal, and Albert Gonzalez were all there for the ribbon cutting, as well as a representative from State Senator Aisha Wahab’s office. Since the park is located along Wondo Way in Santa Clara, former Earthquake’s star Chris Wondolowski was also there to help cut the ribbon.
