The Sunnyvale School District (SSD) is proud to announce that its preschool programs at Lakewood and San Miguel elementary schools have received a Tier 5 rating, the highest possible, from California’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS).
The QRIS framework evaluates early childhood education programs across key quality areas, including child development and school readiness, teacher-child interactions, staff qualifications, and family engagement. The Tier 5 designation highlights the district’s ongoing dedication to providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate learning environments that support the whole child.
“Our District’s promise is that every child who graduates from our campuses is known and prepared for high school and a life of joy and purpose,” said Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Superintendent of the Sunnyvale School District. “That promise begins with our youngest learners. During this critical stage in their development, we are proud to offer warm, engaging, and enriching preschool environments that lay the foundation for future success in school and life.”
SSD currently offers free half-day preschool programs, with both morning and afternoon sessions available Monday through Friday, aligned with the SSD academic calendar.

Lakewood Elementary School is a TK through 5th grade school located at 750 Lakechime Dr., Sunnyvale, CA 94089. The Lakewood Lions motto is “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.” According to the school’s site, the school’s mission is: “to instill in our students high standards of academic achievement, integrity, leadership, and responsible citizenship.”
San Miguel Elementary School is a Spanish-English dual-language immersion school located at 777 San Miguel Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94085. Its student population is made up of TK through 5th grade students.
